My Thoughts On Building Out My Wardrobe
Introduction
I enjoy the simplicity of wearing a uniform. I’ve never got to wear a uniform in school or work before, but there is something satisfying about knowing what exactly I’m going to wear once I decide on a jacket. I will not be doing a complete overhaul. In fact I’m going to try and use as much of my existing wardrobe as possible and only buy missing pieces that can be used in multiple outfits. Currently I probably have one too many pairs of shoes but I can use that as the more “fun” aspect of my outfit. I also have no dress shirts that fit and and I’m probably a couple pairs of trousers or chinos short.
What I’m Thinking About Buying This Year
In March I’ll have a chance to go back to my tailor and clothing store The Armoury in New York. After eating more and exercising I’ve gained about 12 pounds (5.44 Kg) so I only have a pink dress shirt, yellow dress shirt, and white cotton polo that sort of fit. Unfortunately shirts can’t really be resized the same way suits and coats can so I plan to buy two shirts in New York. One dressy white shirt and a more casual sky blue dress shirt. If I’m responsible and can maintain my weight I can try get a couple more shirts next year. Honestly I’m tempted to get an ecru shirt instead of sky blue because I don’t mind wearing a whitish shirt all the time but I should probably just get the sky blue for now. I also think I should be getting navy or olive pants. Chinos are nice and machinable washable so they might be my go to for sport coats. I might just get the green pants in New York and then when I eventually go to Singapore I can go to Yeossal to get the blue trousers or pants. Yeossal is actually how I first got interested in clothing. The below outfits assume that I get the shirts and the olive trousers.
On top of these base outfits I have a very dark blue warm coat and a lighter weight purplish brown patterned coat that I think I can wear with any of these.
Potential Outfits For Rotation
#1
- Blue Rough Textured Sport Coat
- Sky Blue Shirt
- Burgundy Neck Tie
- Navy Pants or Olive Chinos
- Dark Brown Suede Single Monk Straps or Any Black Shoe
#2
- Tan Black Cream Patterned Sport Coat
- White Shirt or blue shirt
- Black Knitted Tie
- Grey Trousers or Navy Pants or Olive Chinos
- Black Pebble Grain Derby
#3
- Navy Blue Suit
- White Shirt
- Burgundy Tie
- Burgundy Loafers
- Extra Note: I could potentially trade the burgundy loafers for black captoe oxfords or wholecuts but the loafers are reverse patina and dark enough that I think I can get away with not buying the oxfords for a while
#4
- Brown Striped Suit
- Any Available Shirt
- Black Tie
- Dark Brown Suede Single Monk Straps or Any Black Shoe
#5 Summer Outfit TBD
Stuff I Might Have That Are Extra
- Crockett and Jones Coniston Black Rough Out Suede Boots: I pretty much only wear these now when it’s really rainy or snowy. But even in extreme cold temperatures in Korea I felt fine with the Pebble Grain Pembrokes. I might consider resoling these with boots with fresh lightweight Vibram lugged soles and give them to my cousin
- Ichigo Ichie Tobacco Suede Oxfords: I could probably use this in my Extra outfit or to form a Summer outfit. because I don’t have anything in mind yet. The fit and comfort of these shoes are impeccable for my feet though.
- Medium Blue Peacoat: Not super warm and I would pretty much never choose this over the darker and longer coat. I first got it in high school and it has served me well but perhaps I should give this away to family member or donate it.
Stuff To Consider
Like I said before, I don’t have a good picture of a Summer outfit and I never have. I will probably have to suffer through one more Summer. I love the idea of a cotton suit or a mostly cotton suit but I haven’t found one where I like the look. In order to make everything else usable I would probably go for a faded green one or do a very saturated green sport coat that I could pair with the blue trousers or chinos. The dark brown suede single monk straps would be good. I think if I end up choosing the lighter green sport coat I can get white jeans and keep the tobacco suede shoes, but if I get the darker green sport coat I can get very dark jeans or trousers and trade out the tobacco suede shoes for black suede tassel loafers.
An alternative is a linen cotton tweed jacket, particular the one made by The Armoury by Ascot Chang. Although it’s brown, the lighter parts of the jacket look almost pink and I can probably get away with wearing my existing white polo or the ecru shirt when I eventually get that. My pink shirt is heavier weight than my other shirts so I probably can’t wear it in the Summer.
